Federal Government Sets 4GW Target for Local Solar Manufacturing
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced an ambitious plan to ramp up domestic solar panel production capacity to 4 gigawatts (GW) annually by late 2025. This policy shift comes in response to a surge in solar equipment imports, which topped N240 billion in the first half of 2025 alone. By domesticating the supply chain, the government aims to lower the cost of renewable energy deployment and create thousands of green jobs.

Energy analysts have welcomed the move, noting that Nigeria already ranks fourth in Africa for solar adoption. However, they caution that achieving the 4GW target requires stable policy incentives and improved infrastructure for manufacturers. The initiative aligns with Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan, which seeks to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. Local manufacturers are reportedly in talks with Chinese technical partners to upgrade their assembly lines to produce high-efficiency monocrystalline panels.
Reducing Import Dependence
Currently, the vast majority of solar components used in Nigeria are imported. The new strategy emphasizes "backward integration," encouraging companies to source glass, aluminum frames, and cables locally. If successful, this push could make Nigeria a regional exporter of solar technology to other West African nations facing similar energy deficits.
